Trademark registration FAQ

How much to register a trademark in Hong Kong?

SetupHK’s trademark service starts from HK$2,500 per class, including the HK$2,000 IPD application fee. Each extra class adds a HK$1,000 government fee plus our service fee. Please enquire.

How long does it take to register a trademark?

The IPD says registration can take as little as six months from receipt, if the application has no deficiencies and no opposition. Corrections, objections or opposition take longer.

Is a registered trademark permanent?

No. Registration lasts 10 years, and each renewal adds 10 more. Apply within 6 months before expiry. You can still renew within 6 months after, with a late fee.

Can an individual register a trademark?

Yes. Applicants can be individuals or companies, not only Hong Kong residents. They need a Hong Kong address for service, not a PO box or virtual office.

How many classes can one application cover?

One application can cover several classes: HK$2,000 government fee for the first, HK$1,000 for each extra.

Can an overseas firm register a trademark in Hong Kong?

Yes. The applicant need not be a Hong Kong company, but must give a Hong Kong address for service.

Do I need to search the register before applying?

It is recommended. The IPD advises checking for identical or similar existing trademarks before filing, to reduce the risk of refusal or opposition.
